Getting a Taste Out of Domains – Registering Millions For Free

Nominet in the UK and ICANN (internationally) have expressed great concern over the fact that huge numbers of domain names have been registered without payment since early 2006. The number of domains registered for free is in the millions. 32 million out of 35 million registered domain names in April 2006 were taken for free!

These maneuvers were known as domain kiting and domain tasting. If you register a domain name multiple times and cancel it multiple times in rapid succession, you will end up owning it for free. This is domain kiting. A scheme of utilizing the five-day grace period to register a multitude of domains, domain tasting helps the schemer find out the most valuable domains to keep. The person who registered the domains decides what names to keep and which to delete without paying for them.

ICANN altered the policy and fee structure around August of 2008 to eliminate those schemes. To put an end to this, Google made the announcement that they would no longer place ads on domain names that were less than five days old. Domain kiters used to use Google AdSense to make money; however, since the Google ban and the ICANN fees, this practice has come to a screeching halt. However, the fees have only caused a small inconvenience for big time domain tasters.

Because of the high number of domains registered, the cost for deleting domains within a given grace period are not high compared to the costs of doing so. Therefore, domain name tasting is still profitable to the big time players. They just pay their fees and keep on going using other ad companies besides Google Ad Sense. AdBrite is one example. However, it is a problem for small players. For this reason, UK’s Nominet created new regulations and rules to end contracts with registrants who continue this sort of practice. These steps have been fairly effective in halting the practice of abusing the system by employing domain tasting to try out domain names without having to pay for them.

Message Labs Intelligence issued a report in 2009 that said that domain tasting tactics had pretty much stopped, although, it is still possible to make some money with this technique. The end of domain tasting is discussed in this report. That is not quite completely correct. While the popularity of these practices has declined, it still occurs. The fact is that for international domains, ICANN still profits from domestic tasting when done correctly – which would be to watch it closely and do it on a large scale.

Sometimes you can see who is the owner of any domain name using Whois Lookup service . Sometimes you see the company name only, no first and last name of the owner. Sometime you see both – company name and owner of the company.
What are the correct steps to register a domain name for LLC without sharing information about the LLC Owner/Administrator/Domain Manager/etc First and Last names?

4) Hyphenated or not This is another area of debate.
Should your domain be one single word or should the words be
separated by hyphens? There are advantages and disadvantages to
both approaches. Single word domain names can be easier to
explain, use on header paper and lend themselves to brand names
very well.

Single word domains are in very, very short supply.

Hyphenated domains names can be slightly more difficult to
explain, may not look as well on headed paper and possibly
harder to establish as a brand name. There’s no shortage of
multiple word domains.

The single biggest advantage a hyphenated domain has is that
searche engines can “read” the domain more easily. For example
in a domain like www.foreignholidaysonline.com the search engine
can only read the first word “foreign” and that’s it. It can’t
tell anything else about the website domain name. If you
hyphenated that to www.foreign-holidays-online.com the search
engine can read “foreign”, “holidays” and “online” as separate
words and therefore knows that this website is about foreign
holidays.

A well chosen hyphenated domain name can be just as effective as
a single word domain name.

Russian Web Addresses

ICANN is the non-profit body that manages and assigns IP addresses and website domain names to the rest of the wired world. One of the most important tasks for ICANN is managing the top-level domain name system. It is a very complex system, but to put it simply, the top-level domain name is the bits that come last in all the web addresses that you and I see. So within www.example.co.uk, ‘.uk’ is the top-level domain name.  The ICANN management system currently organises the top-level domain names into three distinct groups, Categories, Multi-organisations, and Countries.

For Categories, you will see domain names that end with either .com, .gov, .edu, .org, .net. Multi-organisation top level domain names are not common just yet. As for Countries, internet users would have been familiar with .uk (for UK), .au (for Australia), .jp (for Japan), .au (for Australia).

What Is New With Cyrillic Web Addresses?

Instead of only having Latin character web addresses that end with .ru for Russia, ICANN has allowed the Russian Federation to use the Cyrillic domain of ‘.РФ’.  The introduction of the Cyrillic domain names will greatly increase the convenience for local Russians. According to ICANN, only 30% of the internet users are English speaking, and the Cyrillic domain names will make it easier for Russians who are not educated in Latin languages. They can simply remember website addresses because it is now written in full in their own language. ICANN primary goals are to help maintain the operational stability of the internet, to promote competition, and also to ensure the internet is a proportionate representation of the global internet community. Therefore, it is very sensible for ICANN to allow non-Latin based languages to have their say in the future development of the online world. Arabic nations were also amongst the first one to go live with Arabic script in their top level domain names in May this year. Soon, China and Thailand will follow.

Anyone can apply for registration. However, the domain names will be highly priced at the beginning and reduce gradually. The reason behind is to ensure fairer distribution of the most valuable domain names. We are expecting the registration price for the Cyrillic domain to come down to a more standard price as time goes on. It should be noted that for 2010, ICANN is prepared to allow for 500,000 Cyrillic domain names to be registered.

It is also said that his support for the Cyrillic domain names is aimed at boosting the use of Russian because the language has been in decline after the collapse of Soviet Union. It is also another attempt to curb the global influence and dominance of the English language within the digital realm.
